Jose Raul Capablanca
Jose Raul Capablanca was born on November 19, 1888, in Havana, Cuba. He was one of the greatest natural talents in chess history, admired for his speed of play, accuracy and extraordinary endgame technique.
Capablanca became one of the strongest players in the world at a very young age, defeating leading masters such as Frank Marshall, Akiba Rubinstein and Emanuel Lasker. In 1921, he defeated Lasker and became World Champion.
In 1927, he lost the title to Alexander Alekhine, but he remained one of the top players in the world for many years. His games are still studied today for their clarity, elegance and positional mastery.
Capablanca died in New York on March 8, 1942, at the age of 53.
