Erigaisi Arjun
Arjun Erigaisi, born on September 3, 2003, in Warangal, India, is a prominent Indian chess grandmaster and the country's highest-ranked player as of June 2024, surpassing former world champion Viswanathan Anand. Recognized as a chess prodigy, he earned the grandmaster title at the age of 14 years, 11 months, and 13 days, making him the 32nd youngest person ever to achieve this title and the 54th grandmaster from India. His career has been marked by numerous achievements, including winning the Indian National Championship in 2022.
From an early age, Arjun showed exceptional talent in chess, training at the BS Chess Academy in Hanumakonda. His rise in international chess began in 2015 when he won a silver medal at the Asian Youth Championship in Korea. In 2018, he became the first grandmaster from Telangana state. Arjun continued to excel in international tournaments, achieving notable results such as qualifying for the Goldmoney Asian Rapid of the Champions Chess Tour in 2021 and winning the rapid and blitz sections of the Tata Steel India Chess Tournament.
In 2022, Arjun solidified his position among the world's chess elite by winning the Tata Steel Chess Challengers, securing a place in the master's section of the prestigious tournament. He also became the Indian National Champion and won the prestigious Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival. His streak of successes continued into 2024, with victories at the Menorca Open and the Stepan Avagyan Memorial, briefly reaching the top five in the live world rankings.
In October 2024, Arjun won the 2024 WR Chess Masters Cup in London by defeating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in an armageddon tiebreak.
