From 22nd-24th May 2009, in the Odessa National Academy of Law of Ukraine, took place this amazing tournament. 16 grandmasters including Grischuk, Movsesian, Karpov, Svidler, Jakovenko, Gelfand and Gashimov fought for the title.

The final day gave us an impressive match. The first two games between Boris Gelfand of Israel and Peter Svidler of St Petersburg ended in draws.

In the third game Gelfand took a big chance and went three pawns behind. But the strategy paid off, his opponent went astray and lost.

In the final game Svidler was well on the way to victory and equality when disaster struck. In the forth game Peter Svidler needed to win, and did everything right, until move 56 and the winner was… Boris Gelfand!
